Rockhurst Hosts Nobel laureate

Jody Williams talks about the international campaign to Ban Land mines in a talk at Rockhust University.

Jody Williams and local artist Arlie Regier unvail "Deadly Harvest", Regier's stainless steel sculpture honoring the victims of land mines.  The sculpture will be on display at the Empire State Building in New York.

"Deadly Harvest", a stainless steel sculpture designed and built by Arlie and Dave Regier, is about planting explosives in our planet's soil and harvesting children hoeing in the fields, fathers walking to work, and grandmothers collecting firewood.

The uppermost part is a pair of global hemispheres consisting of hundreds of stainless steel shapes.  They represent the beginning of renewal after the landmines are removed and limbs are repaired.  Planted seeds become sprouts, then plants, and then food.  When limbs are repaired or replaced new relationships are formed, families are established.  Houses are built.  Jobs are obtained.  New ideas, creativity and new inventions flourish.  Children and parents hold hands and sing and dance again.

In the middle is a piece of earth blown apart.  The crop of this planting is the anguished people with torn limbs.  A reflective panel places the viewer in the midst of the agony.

Below is a stainless steel Land Mine Treaty book with forms of peace doves, gardens, a charter for signatures and documentation of lessons learned.  A 5-sided figure represents the world's military establishments and their responsibility to help make a safer global community.  Finally, there is an official seal to document an agreement of the world's nations to respect the earth and all its inhabitants.

May the refreshing smell of rain falling on newly plowed fields replace the smoke of exploding landmines and the stench of death forever.
